The UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution to launch an investigation into allegations of abuse by Russian forces in Ukraine.
The council, which suspended Russia on April 7 to be replaced by the Czech Republic a few days ago, convened an emergency hearing in Geneva to hear allegations of war crimes, including the execution of civilians, rape, torture and enforced disappearance.
The resolution was passed with 33 members in favor, 12 abstentions and two votes against (from China and Eritrea).
The adoption of the resolution comes at a time when a video confirmed by CNN and now taken as evidence of war shows how two Russian soldiers shot two unarmed civilians in the back on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital Kiev. Such an act violates the rules of war, which prohibit the targeting of civilians.
CNN says one of the victims was the owner of the car dealership that was robbed, and the other was Leonid Oleksiyovych Plyats, a 68-year-old who worked there as a guard. In the video, Ukrainian civilians are seen talking to Russian soldiers, minutes before being shot from behind and killed.
Also Wednesday, the Russians killed three other civilians after rocket-propelled grenades hit a school in the Chernihiv region, injuring 12 others. Ukraine’s first lady said the attack was deliberate. “The Russians, who claim to attack only military facilities, are waging war against our children.” she said.
Other crime scenes for Ukrainian and international justice institutions include the city of Bucha, where hundreds of civilians were found shot dead in the head, with their hands tied, and the city of Mariupol, which was brutally attacked by the Russians. who have destroyed more than 90 percent of it.
