The Russian economy has begun to show shake-up after several rounds of increasingly harsh sanctions from the west and the US.
Residents of St. Petersburg say prices are rising daily.
Oléssia Oguiéva, resident of St. Petersburg: We go to the store, look at the prices, and honestly just open our eyes in amazement. Because everything is very very expensive. Then when you go home, you see what you bought and realize that you do not have what you need because everything is expensive.
Leonid Kabaline: We were totally unprepared for what was happening, prices have gone up a lot, but salaries have not.
Denis Golikov: Prices are going up a lot, I’m a man who goes to the store every day, so I can not afford it.
While retirees seem to accept the situation tacitly.
Julia Riabinina, retiree: If our leaders and the president have decided that price increases are necessary, then we have to accept it, we have nothing to do.
On Wednesday, the United States announced new additional sanctions against President Putin’s two daughters and his inner circle, as well as against major Russian banks Sberbank and Alfa Bank. The European Union is also expected to take additional steps soon, including a ban on new investment in Russia and a coal embargo. President Joe Biden said earlier Wednesday that the latest round of sanctions would be even more devastating for Russia.
