San Francisco officials in California have banned smoking inside people’s private homes on the grounds of banning involuntary smoking, while cannabis smoke is surprisingly allowed.
The proposal initially included banning cannabis, but the latter was later removed from the law by complaints from activists who said the only place where cannabis smoking was allowed was in the privacy of their own homes as public smoking is prohibited.
““Unlike smokers who can go out of the house to reduce secondary smoking, cannabis users do not have such legal alternatives,” said Rafael Mandelman, a city official who drafted the amendment to ban cannabis. Associated Press.
The law also provides for smoking cessation assistance but if citizens repeatedly break the law they can be fined up to $ 1,000 a day.
The law does not provide for the eviction of tenants for such violations but a $ 1,000 fine would destroy the rent payment system anyway so it could drive ‘de facto’ people out of their apartments.
The fact that tobacco products and not cannabis products are being banned seems strange to many city dwellers where cigarettes were once ubiquitous while cannabis was considered a “drug” consumed by “criminals, drug addicts or rebellious musicians”.
Researchers say cannabis smoke is less harmful and spreads faster than tobacco smoke.

They contain metals and chemicals, poisons or carcinogens that the industry decides for various reasons such as changing the taste or intentionally creating addiction.
