The Parliamentary Secretary of State at the Federal Ministry for Digital Development and Transport, Oliver Luksic, held a meeting with the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj. The Municipality of Tirana has a close cooperation with GIZ and KFW regarding transport in the capital and this was the main topic of discussion in the meeting between Veliaj and Luksic.
“Tirana this year is the European Capital of Youth and we have endless cultural activities, but on the other hand, Tirana is also a growing capital and one of the main needs is public transport. That is why we have a fantastic team of GIZ and KFW, the two main German development agencies, to make sure we significantly improve transport in Tirana. “Today, half of the taxi fleet are electric, we have introduced for the first time a green bus line, while the companies are not being subsidized for the fact that they exist, but according to the kilometers they do, for the stations and the schedules they catch”, said Veliaj.
For his part, the Parliamentary Secretary of State at the Federal Ministry for Digital Development and Transport, Oliver Luksic, expressed his impression of the transformation of Tirana. “We are really very impressed with the way Tirana has developed. Of course, growth, development, also brings its own pain and that is why it becomes even more important for urban planning to be as accurate and careful as possible. I am happy with the fact that GIZ and KFW give their support in order for Tirana to become as digital and electric as possible in the field of transport “, said Luksic.
Veliaj mentioned Tirana’s other ambitious project, that of fast public transport lines, through dedicated lanes. We want to invest together with GIZ and KFW in dedicated lines, in what is called “Bus Rapid Transit”, ie fast bus transit. On the roads of Tirana we have done some pilots, so that the main lines, such as Kinostudio, Porcelani, Unaza and Tirana e Re, have dedicated bus lines, to make sure that whoever chooses this means of transport, reaches faster destination, than those who choose their private car and have to wait in traffic along with 200 thousand other cars “, stressed Veliaj.
“We have the crisis of fuel prices, – said the mayor, – but we also have the opportunity to use the bicycle in a city like Tirana, with 300 days of sunshine, with relatively flat terrain in most urban areas.” Veliaj added that the number of bicycle users has tripled. “We are working with GIZ and KFW colleagues to add even more bike lanes, as well as to better connect the ones we have,” he concluded.
