Security Council adopts resolution on aid to Afghanistan

The resolution, adopted anonymously on December 22, said that the payment of funds, other financial assets and the provision of goods and services necessary to provide timely assistance or to support such activities are permitted.

The UK mission to Twitter said on Twitter that “the resolution will help save lives by ensuring that the 1988 sanctions regime poses no obstacle to the delivery of humanitarian aid”.

“This responds directly to what the humanitarian community has said it needs,” they said.

A World Food Program (WFP) survey last week showed that about 98 percent of Afghans do not have enough to eat, with seven in 10 households borrowing food, pushing them deeper into poverty.

Prices of food, fuel and some other things have risen, making them inaccessible to many people and pressure on the value of the Afghan currency has exacerbated the situation.

Earlier this month, the World Bank said donors had approved the transfer of $ 280 million from a frozen trust fund to two humanitarian agencies to help Afghanistan respond to the humanitarian crisis.

During Afghanistan’s 1996-2001 Taliban rule, militants banned women and girls from education and public life, ordered men to grow beards and attend prayers, banned sports and entertainment, and carried out public executions.
