Seven people have died and at least 20 have been poisoned after doctors suggested they swallow battery fluid before the X-ray.
The victims had died of agony and chronic illness after the fatal mistake at the diagnostic hospital of St. Petersburg in Russia, writes the British The Sun.
An elderly doctor has been detained by authorities as part of a criminal investigation, accused of using industrial liquids that cannot be consumed by humans.
Dr Yevgeny Popov is charged with negligent homicide and substandard service.
The patients had drunk “battery fluid” in preparation of x-ray graphs for examinations of the esophagus, stomach and intestines in his clinic.
But soon they had started to feel severe symptoms which had been neglected by the doctors.
At least four patients had died less than 12 hours after drinking the killer cocktail.
Pathologist Zhanna Schmidt told the local daily ‘Moskovsky Komsomolets’: “At this clinic they took an uncertified powder and dissolved it in water.”
“They were given battery fluid. This is not a joke. “Car batteries contain barium salts.”
“As far as I know, this technical powder was sold for laboratory research, not for oral use.”
“People drink battery fluid, which causes severe intestinal damage, severe burns and poisoning.”
A 60-year-old woman was the first to be rushed to hospital but tragically passed away two hours later.
The father of four, 42-year-old Alexey Tsaryov, said he was hospitalized after his condition worsened when he returned home after an x-ray examination.
His wife, Alexandra, said: “He told the doctors about the symptoms he was going through but they replied that it was normal. He performed the whole procedure but when he said he was not feeling well, the doctors told him ‘Go home, lie down.’ “
“But things started to get worse. He said he could no longer feel his face, hands, and felt that a poisonous substance was inside him.
The latest death in connection with the incident was announced today.
Victoria Andreeva said her mother Tatyana, 66, had suffered a painful death after drinking the substance before X-rays.
“I do not understand how a hospital can recommend a substance that hurts your body so much that you die within hours. “It’s very strange.”
More than 20 others had been poisoned by the substance but had survived.
Russian authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the incidents.
