The American airline United Airlines said that it will decommission 24 of its Boeing 777 aircraft, after one of them suffered an engine failure, after taking off on Saturday.
The plane, with 231 passengers and 10 crew members on board, was forced to return to Denver Airport in Colorado. No injuries were reported.
In response to the incident, Japan urged all airlines using the Boeing 777 with the same Pratt & Whitney 4000 engine to evade its airspace.
Boeing said it supported Japan’s decision and recommended suspending operations of all 777 aircraft with the same engine.
The manufacturer said that 69 Boeing 777 aircraft with this engine are currently in service worldwide.
According to the US Federal Aviation Administration, United is the only US airline to fly such aircraft.
The agency ordered additional inspections of Boeing 777 aircraft equipped with the Pratt & Whitney 4000 engine after the incident in Denver./REL
