Looks like a view from a remote village, sheep and goats grazing quietly while a shepherd guards. But no, this is actually Barcelona’s largest public park, not a village.
Since April, the Municipality of Barcelona has housed 290 sheep and goats there to eat underground plants in the Collserola National Park on the outskirts of Spain’s second largest city.
The purpose of the pilot scheme is to reduce the risk of fires by clearing vegetation in an environmentally friendly manner. It also helps educate the 1.6 million inhabitants of the Mediterranean port city for the village, says one of the project experts.
“The purpose of this project is to prevent fires using livestock, ie fire prevention in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way, replacing classical or conventional methods with mechanical tools that use fuel. “In extreme hot weather, this whole mountain massif, this whole natural park, can burn in just eight hours, which means that we can have a serious problem later with the evacuation of people.” said the expert.
The 8,200-acre park is 22 times the size of New York’s Central Park and eight times the size of the Bois de Boulogne in Paris.
Its points of view offer comprehensive views of Barcelona, and the hiking trails make it popular with runners, cyclists and people going for walks.
