Hunters chasing a group of monkeys that have attacked and injured about 50 people in western Japan said today that they have hanged one of them.
Officials in the city of Yamaguchi have been trying for days to track down the aggressive group, which has become notorious in the news for attacking residents, leaving many with minor scratches and bite wounds.
Yesterday evening, the licensed hunters shot one of the monkeys with tranquilizers and then caught him near the lake.
The monkey was then identified as responsible for one of the attacks, so the animal, about half a meter tall and about four years old, was eliminated.
Official patrols have been out regularly in Yamaguchi since the attacks on children and adults began three weeks ago. The hunt continues for the group of monkeys after 49 people were reported injured.
“Witnesses describe monkeys of various sizes, but even after their capture, other attacks have been reported,” said an official who declined to be named.
Japanese macaque monkeys are often seen in various parts of the country and are considered pests that damage crops and enter homes, but multiple attacks in Yamaguchi are unusual.
Some of the residents have shown in the media and social networks how the monkeys have started using umbrellas or gardening shears to protect themselves from people.
