Violent protests continued on Wednesday evening to prevent the approval by government authorities of a French proposal for a compromise between North Macedonia and Bulgaria that would pave the way for Skopje to start negotiations for membership in the European Union.
An incident took place in Skopje’s Skenderbe Square, where there were gunshots, which then prompted a fierce exchange of accusations between the opposition and the ruling parties.
The leader of the opposition VMRO-DPMNE, Hristijan Mickovski, said that he was the target of a gun attack. In a press conference late Wednesday, he said that a person, whom the media in Skopje have reported to be from the country’s Albanian community, had fired a gun, although the circumstances of this incident have not yet been clarified.
“For a long time I have received notifications of attempts to liquidate me and tonight that shooter was supposed to target me. All this is planned by the government because the policeman was nowhere when the person started opening fire“, said the opposition leader, Mickovski.
The police have arrested the person suspected of being involved in this incident. Special forces have intervened to disperse groups of protesters in this case.
Meanwhile, the ruling Social Democratic League has raised suspicions that VMRO is fabricating incidents to escalate conflicts and that the gunman, whose name is Citi Koka, is the brother of an official of the Alliance for Albanians, whom SDSM says that he campaigned for VMRO, namely for the mayor of the Municipality of Skopje in the last local elections.
The Democratic Union for Integration condemned the incidents in the protests, which it calls anti-European and instigated by pro-Russian elements.
“The incident between the activists of VMRO, Levica (Left) and Alliance (for Albanians) cannot be considered premeditated and planned by this coalition since the protagonists were precisely these three parties and their supporters”it is said in a DUI press release.
Meanwhile, Hristijan Mickovski in a message to the Albanians emphasizes that “this battle is a joint one”, while recalling the cooperation of the two peoples in history.
There were also violent protests in front of the parliament of North Macedonia, where stones and pyrotechnic devices were thrown. Authorities say two police officers were injured. The Macedonian opposition, VMRO-DPMNE and E Majta continue to call for daily protests with large participation.
