The Slovak Parliament today approved the extension of the state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
After a plenary debate, which continued intermittently since Wednesday, a large majority of MPs present voted today in favor of the government motion.
The state of emergency, which was declared on October 1 and has already been extended several times, will remain in force until March 19.
Among other things, the state of emergency allows for the forced recruitment and transfer of health workers and the banning of rallies.
A curfew has been in place since the beginning of the year, but it is difficult to control due to confusing exceptions.
Almost 7,000 deaths from COVID-19 have been recorded in Slovakia so far.
According to Slovak health authorities, there have been 303,420 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the country since the pandemic broke out.
According to the ECDC agency, the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in Slovakia has been 526 in the last 14 days, more than four times higher than in Germany, by contrast.
With 239.3 deaths from COVID-19 per million inhabitants in the last 14 days, Slovakia is currently ahead of all other countries in Europe.
