Slovenian public sector workers’ unions have threatened to strike today if the government does not respond to their demands for a pay rise within the next week.
As Branimir Strukel and Jakob Pocivavsek, who represent these unions in the negotiations with the Government, said at the press conference, they have not yet received a response to the submitted proposals, which are expected by Tuesday at the latest. They have warned that otherwise they will organize a membership vote to start the strike, reports Hina.
Public sector employees ‘unions are dissatisfied with the decision of the Slovenian government, which by a special law and in agreement with the doctors’ unions approved a higher law for about 7000 public health doctors.
The law confirmed at the end of 2021 guarantees them a six-tier advance in the otherwise unified pay system for the public sector, which practically means that doctors’ salaries would increase by almost 25 percent.
The Fidesz union has been demanding for years that doctors’ salaries be excluded from the public sector pay system, as they think they are unpaid. They initially reacted to the Government’s decision in the unions of employees in social and health institutions, saying that they are disappointed that the Government has neglected them and demanded a six-degree salary increase and have announced a warning strike for 16 February.
Responding to other unions’ demands for wage increases, Public Administration Minister Bostjan Koritnik said he could not be prejudiced, but said they would be unsustainable for planned public finances as they would increase public spending by one billion euros.
