In the face of the threat of a Russian invasion, and the declarations of Western countries that they would not send troops to fight in Ukraine, its president Volodymir Zelensky decided to put aside the language of diplomacy.
A few days after urging the West not to spread panic over the crisis because it makes it so much worse, the Ukrainian head of state spoke to the BBC in harsh tones about some European countries.
“There are some member states of the European Union that are playing the game of the Russians, and that is wrong“, Said Zelensky without gloves. He reiterated the idea that the current situation clearly proves that the only path for Ukraine is that of NATO and EU membership, although he acknowledged that it will be quite long.
“For me as president, the most important thing on this path is not to lose my country. NATO is a guarantee of security. How can we choose another path? For us, this is the guarantee that we will not lose our independence“, He declared.
Asked by journalist Sarah Rainsford about pressure from some European countries that want to keep Ukraine away from the North Atlantic alliance, the president replied: “We can not close our eyes and say that Russia is the only one who does not want us in NATO. “Because that is not the truth.”
Zelensky stressed that there is no need for a national referendum on NATO membership, as according to him, this wish of Ukraine is already written in the founding document of the country.
