For a while it seemed that we might be able to celebrate New Year’s Eve in major cities around the world with something resembling the great celebrations of yesteryear.
Another increase in Covid-19 and the rapid spread of the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus have shattered those hopes, at least in part of the world.
In New York City, New Year’s celebration in Times Square will be “reduced”, with less fun and everyone is required to wear a mask, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office said on Thursday.
But some major cities in Europe, where the spread of Omicron has been surprising, have already announced plans for flat-rate cancellation.
Other cities around the world with traditionally iconic celebrations still plan to host their events, but with security precautions in place.
Since December 23, this is what some of the world’s cities are traditionally doing with big New Year’s events.
Here are some of the cities that have canceled the New Year celebrations: Athens, Berlin, Edinburgh, London, New Dehi, Paris, Rome, Bangkok, Cape Town, Dubai, Las Vegas, Rio De Janeiro, Sydney and Taipei.
