Spanish Labor Minister Yolanda Diaz announced today that the government has reached an agreement with unions and employers on labor law reforms.
The reform demanded by Brussels will be voted on in January and was a condition for the release of billions of euros in coronavirus aid funds from the EU.
Details of the deal have not been made public but are believed to exacerbate the labor market with temporary contracts, retraining schemes and increased employer power.
The left-wing government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been negotiating reform for months with the country’s two main unions.
The changes were one of the reforms demanded by Brussels in exchange for the EC’s full 140 billion-euro bailout package.
It will replace the Spanish labor law passed in 2012, which was also criticized for reducing job security and bonuses.
