Rakip Belishaku, 28 years old from Kuci i Berat, just finished his studies in the field of petroleum engineering, started working as an engineer in different countries of the world, England, Scotland and Israel. For several years he sought offshore oil wells. But the love for the land brought him back to the village.
Rakip Belishaku: “What I missed the most in those years was the land, the greenery and the people.”
Rakipi returned home with clear ideas, engineering would give up to deal with agriculture. As a start he uprooted the tomato roots that his parents had planted and planted natural sponge seeds.
Rakip Belishaku: “I graduated as a petroleum engineer and for 7 years I worked for various companies internationally. And in 2019 I came across this plant for the first time at Vietnam Airport. I did not know what it was out of curiosity I took one and brought it to Albania. “
This decision of the 28-year-old was not welcomed by his family and friends, because according to them in agriculture he sheds a lot of sweat, and at the end of the month he gives you some money.
Rakip Belishaku: “My family has historically been involved in agriculture and it was their idea to find me a profession to leave the village. But man does what feels best and has his passions. “Maybe it’s better to pursue passions than a secure job.”
As a petroleum engineer, Rakipi managed to earn approximately 5 thousand euros per month, but he is convinced that in the future the sponge plant will bring him even more income.
Rakip Belishaku: “The profession of oil engineer is highly paid abroad. My last job reached the level of 200 euros a day. I believe that soon we will be able to create such a standard with the war. “
The natural sponge that is cultivated in Kuc of Berat, within 2 years managed to be recognized in Europe, the first exports have started with the German state.
Rakip Belishaku: “We tried 4 different varieties of war until we managed to find what suits the land here in Albania. I wanted to create a brand made in albania and export it. ”
For Rakip it is better to extract natural sponge from the ground, than black gold from the depths of the sea.
Rakip Belishaku: “I think this is my future and I will develop it. “
