The famous Netflix series, “Squid Game” was nominated for an Emmy Award in the main drama category.
As a result, “Squid Game” becomes the first non-English language series to be nominated for an Emmy Awards, according to LA Times.
Created by South Korean director Hwang Dong-hyuk, the series tells the story of a group of people who are in dire financial straits as they compete in a series of deadly children’s games for a cash prize.
Four members of the main cast of “Squid Games” were nominated in individual acting categories for their performances. Lee Jung-jae, who portrayed the kind-hearted but debt-ridden father Seong Gi-hun, was nominated for the ‘Best Actor in a Drama Series’ award.
Jung Ho-yeon was nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series’ for her portrayal of Kang Sae-byeok.
Park Hae-soo and Oh Yeong-su were both among the supporting actors in a drama series nominated.
Park portrayed Seong’s former classmate Cho Sang-woo, while Oh played Oh Il-nam, a fellow senior that Seong befriends during the competition. Lee You-mi was nominated for the ‘Guest Actress in a Drama Series’ award for her performance as Ji-Yeong.
The cast members of “Squid Game” are the first domestic Korean actors to be nominated in their respective categories.
Series creator Hëang is also the first domestic Korean creator to earn Emmy nominations for drama writing and directing.
“Squid Game” scored 14 Emmy Awards nominations, including for production design, cinematography, special effects, editing, main title theme and special effects.
The fact that a South Korean drama is eligible for the Emmy Awards is itself a sign of changes in the industry.
The Emmy Awards usually honor achievements in American television, but the spread of broadcasting has made non-English language programming more accessible to American audiences than ever.
Historically, American television producers and networks have focused their original programming development on American English-speaking audiences.
The need to appeal to markets around the world has led companies to expand into international productions in foreign languages, which has also contributed to making the library available to their American subscribers.
Because Squid Game is an international production made for US-based Netflix for US release, it qualifies.
