The book believed to have been stolen 15 years ago was rediscovered when it was put up for auction in Germany.
The ancient manuscript of the French astrologer Michel de Nostredame, now known as Nostradamus, was stolen from a bookstore in Rome but has now been returned to the Italian capital.
The manuscript entitled “Prophecies of M. Nostradamus” dates back to 300 years ago but it is not clear why the manuscript of about 500 pages was stolen from the center of historical studies Barnabite in Rome.
The book was on sale at a second-hand market in Paris and the German city of Karlsruhe before a collector matured to sell it at the Pforzheim auction house in Baden-Württemberg for € 12,000.
That same April last year, Italian cultural protection agents found the book at an auction and identified it as a copy of the Rome library, with 1991 stamps on its pages.
The Rome public prosecutor said he had contacted German counterparts in Pforzheim, who launched verifications.
They determined that the famous book for predicting important world events, was an original work of Nostradamus, and the one that was trafficked there after the theft in Rome.
The Italian cultural heritage protection group has been established since 1969 and says it has recovered more than 3 million stolen works. By December 2021 the US had returned more than 200 ancient works of art to Italy.
