Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, has stated that the organization will not be involved in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
In a statement to the media after meeting with other NATO ministers, Stoltenberg reiterated that financial assistance to Ukraine would continue, but that there would be no military intervention.
“What is happening now in Ukraine is painful. We have sent financial support to Ukraine and will continue to do so. We are giving our support and we have taken the strongest sanctions ever and we have asked Putin to stop the war. We have a duty to call for him to stop the war, because that would cause even more casualties. We have imposed strong sanctions, but at the same time NATO can not be involved in the war in UkraineSaid the secretary.
Asked by reporters what the “B” plan is if Putin does not back down, Stoltenberg said:
“We told Putin that if he got even more involved, he would pay even more. Russia must sit down in talks and find a solution. We hope this will be the next step. In all the meetings we have supported the idea of supporting Ukraine, but we will not be part of the conflict. I believe that if NATO is involved, the situation will get worse. We will not be part of the conflict. ”
