COVID-19 vaccines can protect babies after birth and reduce the number of their hospitalizations due to fever.
A study conducted by health institutions in the US is thus done among the first that shows that there is a concrete effect on newborn babies receiving the vaccine from mothers during pregnancy.
The vaccines mentioned in the report are Pfizer and Moderna. Antibodies developed from the COVID-19 vaccine were known to be transferred to the fetus via the umbilical cord.
However, until now it was unclear how the vaccine affects children after birth.
“To date, we have not had any data on whether these antibodies can provide protection for the baby against coronavirus.Said Dr. Dana Meaney-Delman, an obstetrician and researcher at the Centers for Disease Control, CDC, in the United States.
The observed infants were treated in 20 hospitals in 17 states from July 2021 to mid-January, during the increase in cases involving the Delta and Omicron variants. The researchers did not immediately examine the extent of the infection in the newborn.
Instead, they looked at data on 176 children under 6 months who were hospitalized with COVID-19 and 203 in hospital for some other reason and maternal vaccination status. Currently, about two-thirds of pregnant women in the United States are fully vaccinated.
