Sweden has decided not to recommend the COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 5 to 12, the Swedish Health Agency announced on Thursday.
“With the knowledge we have today of the low risk of serious illness for children, we do not see a clear benefit from vaccinating them,” agency spokeswoman Britta Bjorkholm told a news conference.
She stressed that this decision could be reversed if the research leads to new knowledge or a new variant changes the course of the pandemic. Children at risk are already receiving the vaccine.
Sweden, despite limited testing, had more than 40,000 new cases on January 26, a record number. But while the fourth wave is breaking records of the number of infected, the health system is not under as much pressure as in previous waves. On Thursday there were 101 patients in intensive care, well below 400 in the spring of 2021. In Sweden, a country that was criticized at the start of the pandemic for liberal measures to fight the virus, a total of 16,000 people died.
The Swedish government on Wednesday extended restrictions that include limited opening hours for restaurants and the number of visitors to domestic events. The measures have been extended by two weeks and the government hopes to lift them on February 9th.
