Swedish military forces on the strategic island of Gotland, in the Baltic, today launched military maneuvers to increase capacity from war tensions in the region.
Swedish Gripen fighter jets, tanks and heavy artillery were mobilized in exercises that raise the alarm of conflict.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today called on the West to avoid creating “panic” in the face of the honorable situation with the troops at the border.
“We do not need to panic,” Zelensky told a news conference, stressing the need to stabilize the country’s damaged economy.
He added that the current threat is no greater than the accumulation of military troops in the area last spring.
“We have signals that tomorrow there will be a war, even from a respected leader. Why this panic? “Do you understand how much this costs our country?” Said Zelinski.
The Ukrainian leader’s attempt to reduce tensions comes after a comment by the US president who said today that “the invasion of Ukraine by Moscow will happen these days.”
But Zelensky said the biggest risk for Ukraine is destabilizing the situation inside the country.
The West says Russia has deployed more than 100,000 troops and vehicles along the border with Ukraine and is threatening sanctions in the event of an attack.
The US, Britain and Australia have raised alarm in Kiev by removing the families of diplomats from embassies.
Ukraine has been fighting a separatist conflict in the east against pro-Russian militants since 2014 that claimed more than 1,000 lives.
