This is a serious health issue. Plastic particles that we use every day and that live for hundreds of years are consumed by us unconsciously through food, water and respiration.
It’s very easy. Pollution from the massive use of plastic bags and other plastic products has contaminated the entire planet – from the summit of Mount Everest to the deeper oceans.
But if we say plans, Everest or ocean does not mean that the problem is distant and that here in Albania we are not facing the same concern and alarming situation. Part of this problem is our health.
One way or another, every food product on the table is contaminated with plastic particles, it is enough to mention the basics, water and salt to continue with all the varieties, seafood and land fruits, vegetables, products and animal by-products, those packaged, exported – almost everything we consume.
Not without reason, the plastic risk to health has become a scientific mission. In March of this year, microplastic pollution is first discovered in human blood, where scientists found small plastic particles in almost 80% of people tested.
The discovery shows that particles can enter the body and can remain in organs. For this reason, scientists have raised alarming concern as microplastics analyzed in the laboratory turn out to cause damage to human cells. Air pollution particles enter the body damaging cell walls, creating various allergies to the point of causing deadly diseases.
“Cell damage is in many cases the initial onset of health effects,” confirms Evangelos Danopoulos, a researcher at Hull York Medical School in the UK. “We have to worry. “Right now, there is really no way we can protect our health from this phenomenon.”
The best care is to avoid the problem at its beginning, namely to reduce the use of plastic in our daily lives. And this requires a collective involvement with the involvement of the society in which we live, companies that produce plastics and regulatory bodies. We must act without further delay to protect our food chain.
In defense against this phenomenon, Albania is entering a new phase of care for the risk that plastic pollution causes to health, environment and economy. June 2022 marks a turning point in the avoidance of plastic bags. But as the law already passed in Parliament enters into force, public and international institutions are running important awareness campaigns – the main factor that will make the initiative successful and our healthier living are us consumers! / Agroweb
