The ruling Taliban in Afghanistan have ordered the banning of the video distribution platform TikTok so and the simultaneous online gaming network PUBG, calling them ‘harmful influences’ who are driving Afghan youth ‘off the wrong path’.
The militant group added that it would also ban television stations that are considered to broadcast “immoral material”.
The development comes after several similar banning measures on music content, movies or telenovelas.
The Taliban had initially promised a more moderate approach the second time they come to power in the country, but again cuts in rights are reported, especially for women.
The group is known for leading the hardline Islamic version, as it did in 1996 and 2001.
Taliban spokesman Inamullah Samangani said the latest measure was to “prevent the new generation from being misinformed by harmful currents”.
It is not clear exactly when the ban takes effect and how long it will last.
This is the first time the group has banned an online application since coming to power last August.
TikTok and the PUBG network have become more widely used by young Afghans as some other forms of entertainment are banned, says the BBC’s Afghan correspondent Hameed Shuja.
The number of internet users in Afghanistan has increased significantly in recent years currently reaching nine million.
Meanwhile about two-thirds of the local population of 39 million are under 25 years old.
The development comes as explosive assassinations continued in the country, such as the one on Thursday where about 30 people were killed in an explosion near the Mazar-e-Sharif mosque.
