The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) announced on Thursday that 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Azerbaijan has entered Europe since September last year via the Kipoi interconnection point on the Greek-Turkish border, where TAP joins the Trans Anatolian Pipeline ( TANAP).
Of the total amount about 8.5 billion cubic meters have been shipped to Italy. TAP Managing Director Luca Schieppati said that “10 billion cubic meters is a symbolic achievement, but very important.”
According to him, “for about a year of commercial activity, TAP has provided efficient, continuous and reliable service, making an important contribution to the security and diversification of energy sources in Europe.
Mr. Schieppati has stated that it is currently possible to achieve a full transport capacity of 10 billion cubic meters per year and that capacity can be further increased through short-term auctions.
While the Commercial Director of TAP, Marija Savova, said that “Transporting the first amount of natural gas of 10 billion cubic meters in Europe increases the liquidity in the gas markets and strengthens the role of TAP as a reliable carrier that can make an important contribution to energy security in Europe ”.
She said that within 45-65 months, the capacity could be doubled, expanding in several phases, up to 20 billion cubic meters on demand.
According to TAP, the European segment of the southern gas corridor has the capacity to transport approximately 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year to several European markets.
TAP transports natural gas from the Shah Deniz field to the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea to Europe.
The pipeline, approximately 878 km long, connects to the Trans Anatolian Pipeline near the Turkish-Greek border at Kipoi, traversing Greece, Albania and the Adriatic Sea, before reaching the shores of southern Italy. TAP is expected to facilitate gas supplies to Southeast European countries through future interconnectors.
In particular, Bulgaria will be able to cover up to 33% of its total gas demand through the TAP pipeline, following the completion of the Greece-Bulgaria interconnector. TAP outlets in Greece and Albania, along with land outlets in Italy, offer numerous opportunities for transporting gas from Azerbaijan to major European markets.
TAP is important for Europe, as a key part of the Southern Gas Corridor both strategically and economically.
In Albania, President Ilir Meta welcomed the decision to supply natural gas to Western Europe through the TAP pipeline.
“TAP is the most important strategic foreign investment in Albania, the fruit of successful and strategic cooperation between Albania, European partners and the United States with the government of Azerbaijan,” said President Meta.
According to him, “in addition to the extraordinary impact of this major investment on the economic and social development of the country, especially in the pipeline crossing areas, this project significantly increases Europe’s independence from Russian gas.” / VOA
