Tattoo artists have said a new European Union ban on thousands of chemicals used in paints could hurt their industry.
The restrictions, which were approved Tuesday, apply to substances that can cause cancer or other health problems, and are mainly related to colors.
The European Union has updated the regulation on chemicals, which was initially adopted in 2020.
The ban includes 4,000 chemicals, some of which are used for tattoos, but their replacements are on the market.
According to the EU, the new rules will reduce the number of negative reactions.
However, those who deal with tattoos have complained that replacements are not so easy to find, and this can affect consumer demands.
After two years of the pandemic, many businesses have complained that they have not had enough time to make changes.
“The coronavirus, several months after its closure, has hit us hard. “Now that puts a lid on it,” said Hamburg-based tattoo artist Sebastian Makowski.
The European Union estimates that over 12 percent of Europeans have tattoos, and that figure could double among young people.
In Germany, it is believed that one in five people have tattoos, while in Belgium, the Government believes that 500,000 new tattoos are done every year.
