19 foreign citizens were sworn in before the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, for loyalty to the Albanian state and respect for the Constitution and the legislation of the Republic of Albania. Referring to the events in Ukraine, Veliaj underlined that in difficult moments, citizens must all be together, leaving behind their differences and political agendas. “I have known Ukraine from the meetings I had with my colleague Klitchko and other colleagues of the municipalities there. Their policy is a bit like in the Balkans, divided, with constant debates and attempts to hinder each other. “But, despite the differences, differences, ambitions, elbows, despite the desires they may have had in their political agendas, I do not believe that there was a period like this, when everyone was united as a nation,” said Veliaj.
Therefore, he said, this moment of obtaining Albanian citizenship should be treated as a day of unity in diversity. “On good days, in a democracy, it is normal to agree, not to agree. To have different ambitions, different careers, different political convictions. But, sometimes, being Albanian, like being Ukrainian, can only be needed for that difficult day, where we have to leave every other difference, every conviction, every ambition, every greed, every desire we may have, or aspirations , to unite only in a coat of arms, in a logo, in the oath we take today, to remain loyal to this republic, this state and nation. “I would like to treat this day as a union in diversity,” he said.
Veliaj called for more solidarity in these difficult moments to support the citizens of Ukraine with assistance. “We experienced what happened in Kosovo, which is very similar to what is happening today in Ukraine. In difficult times, the problem is the people who remain indifferent, those who do not take a position, who do not solve problems, since the mania to be on the sides, being silent, are practically done with the aggressor. I would like even in a civilian structure, such as ours, that we can not provide military assistance, as far as we can, to help with food aid, as with the trucks we are taking to Ukraine, or even with a decision of the Municipal Council, to take a stand and not to remain indifferent, when not far from us something terrible is happening “, said Veliaj.
After reading the formula, 19 citizens from Kosovo, Italy, France, Australia, Serbia, Greece, etc., signed the oath.
