A ship in the Red Sea was attacked today off the coast of Yemen, a monitoring group of the British naval command announced.
The Naval Commercial Operations Group said the attack took place off the coast of Hodeida, the disputed port city in Yemen, where the civil war turned into a serious international conflict has been going on for nearly seven years.
Officials said investigations are ongoing into the incident, but gave no further details.
The US Fifth Fleet also confirmed that it was “aware” of the attack but declined to comment further on the motives or those responsible.
Saudi Arabia-led military coalition fights in impoverished Yemen since March 2015 against Yemeni rebels Houthi supported by Iran.
The latter have control of the capital Sanaa as well as the port city of Hodeida, from where it is rumored that today’s attack came.
The incident marks the latest episode of naval attacks in the region of heavy fighting. In January the Houthi rebels seized the UAE ship Rwabee, also part of the Saudi Arabian coalition.
The ship’s crew was released last month for a poor ceasefire agreement during the Ramadan months. The ceasefire must continue to be respected at present.
