The two top leaders shared the same views on the role that religion plays in interpersonal relationships, the contribution it plays in preserving these values, especially in protecting the family, as the basic cell of society, a role which they valued as invaluable.
The Pope praised the special role played by President Spahiu in the promotion and dissemination throughout Albania of the Document signed in Abu Dhabi on human brotherhood. During the audience, President Spahiu asked Pope Francis for the support of the Vatican state for the independence of Kosovo.
Afterwards, the leader of the Muslims of Albania met with the Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, Monsignor Paul Richard Gallagher and the Chairman of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, Cardinal Miguel Ayngel Ayuso Guixot.
The meeting between the Pope and the President of the Muslim Community of Albania is the first of its kind since the establishment of the KMSH. This visit was initiated by the Apostolic Nuncio in Tirana, Mr. Luigi Bonazzi.
President Spahiu, together with the accompanying delegation, was received and accompanied at all times by the Charge d’Affaires of the Republic of Albania in the Vatican, Mrs. Majlinda Dodaj.
