Just six months after taking office, the Bulgarian coalition government led by Kirill Petkov faces a no-confidence motion Wednesday (June 22nd), causing new political instability in the EU’s poorest member state.

The no-confidence motion was raised by the opposition parties over the “failure of the current cabinet’s financial and economic policies”.

Support for the no-confidence motion has so far been expressed by other opposition parties – the party of ethnic Turks and other Muslims in Bulgaria, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) and the nationalist Vezrazhdane party, as well as Slavi Trifonov’s party. such a people ”(ITN), which broke away from the ruling coalition.

Voting is expected after 19:00 local time. The motion needs 121 votes to pass in parliament. Currently, the ruling coalition has the support of only 109 deputies out of 240 lawmakers in parliament.

Six MPs from the ITN group are also expected to support the government, but its only hope of retaining power depends on the possibility of more ITN MPs voting against the government’s last-minute ouster.

If the motion succeeds, it will be the first no-confidence vote in Bulgaria’s democratic history and will almost certainly lead to new elections in the country of 6.5 million.

Petkov’s government came to power with a commitment to resolutely fight corruption, to remove Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev and the head of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Sotir Tsatsarov. He also vowed to strengthen the commission’s powers. Tsatsarov’s resignation came first.

On June 9th, a bill to expand the powers of the Anti-Corruption Commission was submitted to Parliament. Deputies from the ‘There is such a people’ party were harshly critical and accused Petkov of trying to install “his Geshev”. Lawmakers from the We Continue Change party likely saw this as a political attack by former coalition partners and accused them of sabotaging the effort.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Policy Committee of the Bulgarian Parliament will today consider the French proposal for resolving open issues with Northern Macedonia.

Based on the assessments, it will be announced whether Sofia will lift its veto or not, which has blocked the process of Albania’s membership in the EU. On Tuesday, June 21, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, announced positive news about the negotiations.
