A New York court will rule Thursday whether former US President Donald Trump and two of his children should testify as part of a New York Attorney General’s civil investigation into their family’s company businesses .
Judge Arthur Engoron of the New York State Court in Manhattan said he plans to announce Thursday afternoon whether Attorney General Letitia James can force Mr. Trump, his son Donald Trump Jr., to resign. and his daughter Ivanka Trump to testify in the investigation.
The expected decision comes after a two-hour hearing in which Mr. Trump’s lawyers accused prosecutor James of playing with their clients’ constitutional rights, seeking evidence she could use against them in a parallel criminal investigation. Mr Donald Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba, accused Ms James of “gross investigations and misconduct that have never taken place in this country”, citing statements reflecting the Attorney General’s “low disgust” with Mr Trump. .
“If he were not who he is, she would not do that,” said lawyer Habba. “This court can help stop this circus.” Attorney Kevin Wallace, from prosecutor James’s office, denied the allegations. “They have not proven anything unfair,” Wallace said. “Donald Trump,” said Mr Wallace, “is not a stranger to the prosecution or has no legal problems.”
The attorney general is demanding that Mr. Trump’s children testify by March 18 and former President Trump by March 25. Last month, Ms. James said her three-year investigation into the Trump Organization had found significant evidence of possible fraud.
