The director of the Australian Open tennis tournament blamed “bad communication” for the expulsion of Novak Djokovic from Australia before the start of the tournament, but said that the number one tennis player in the world plans to participate in this competition in 2023.
Djokovic returned to his home country, Serbia, after his visa was revoked before the Australian Open was canceled due to his coronavirus vaccination status.
He had flown to Melbourne a week before the start of the tournament, but Australia’s decision to cancel his visa dampened Djokovic’s hopes of competing for the 21st Grand Slam title, which would break the record.
Tournament director Craig Tiley was asked if unvaccinated tennis player Djokovic could take part in the 2023 race, despite the possibility that he could be stripped of his visa for up to three years.
Tiley said that Djokovic’s goal is to participate in the Australian Open in 2023.
He blamed “rapidly changing conditions” and “bad communication” with the federal government over Djokovic’s expulsion, as the Serbian tennis player had initially secured a medical exemption from tennis authorities in Australia.
“It was a very challenging environment,” Tiley said, adding that the Australian Tennis Federation had repeatedly tried to clarify the situation with national authorities, but the evolving nature of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, he said, had “many contradictions and complexity with information ”.
Tiley also denied allegations that Djokovic was planning to sue the Australian Tennis Federation.
Djojovic has won the Australian Open nine times, including last year.
“At the end of the day, he is the number one tennis player in the world and he really loves the Australian Open,” said Tiley.
