“I want everyone to know my true version, I’m gay,” said Jake Daniels, a 17-year-old Blackpool footballer who plays for the English Premier League. The striker who debuted with the first team of Blackpool this season, through the official website of the club has found the space to communicate his truth.
“As far as the playing field is concerned, this season has been fantastic for me. I signed my first contract as a professional, while in the youth sector I scored 30 goals, achieving many successes. But as far as the off-field aspect is concerned, I have hidden myself really. I have known all my life that I am gay and now I think I am ready to share this with everyone. To dare and discover my sexuality I have been inspired by athletes like Josh Cavallo, Matt Morton or even other athletes. I have great support from my family, club and manager.
Even friends in the youth sector have been supportive and have pushed me to speak the truth in front of the whole world. I hated the fact that I had to lie and hide for the rest of my life. I want to be a role model, maybe there are those who do not feel comfortable speaking the truth. “But I tell everyone not to change and to show themselves, this is the most important thing,” said Daniels.
Meanwhile, Daniels is the first footballer to talk openly about his sexuality since 1990, when at that time it was Justin Fashan, the former West Ham player.
