The European Parliament has approved the resolution stating that the final agreement between Kosovo and Serbia should be “based on mutual recognition”.
This is the first time that mutual recognition is mentioned in a document of European institutions. Five EU states do not recognize Kosovo, but the EP is the only institution that treats Kosovo as a state.
However, the adopted resolutions are not binding documents for the EU states.
At the EP session, the reports on Kosovo, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina were approved. In the three reports, a call was made to support the European perspective of these countries.
“Relations with Serbia should be normalized through an agreement which should be based on mutual recognition,” said the German deputy, Viola von Cramon, who drafted the report on Kosovo.
In the report on Kosovo, there is again a call for the liberalization of visas.
“Today’s vote proves the commitment of the Parliament for the integration of Kosovo in the EU and gives an instruction on how European standards can be implemented in Kosovo. Kosovo has continuously demonstrated its commitment to advance in EU-related reforms and has clearly positioned itself as a reliable, powerful partner connected to the European and transatlantic alliance. Unfortunately, the EU has failed to ensure visa-free movement for citizens of Kosovo. I really hope that this is the last report mentioning the failure of visa liberalization”, said Viola von Cramon.
