The European Union (EU) drug regulator on Thursday approved the use of the Pfizer antiviral pill against COVID-19, which is for treating adults with serious illnesses, at a time when all countries are stepping up their arsenal to fight the Omicron variant.
Approval by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), allows EU member states to use the drug after the regulator gave instructions for its urgent use at the end of last year.
Italy, Germany and Belgium are among the EU countries that have bought the vaccine.
The EMA is also evaluating the application for approval of the pill created by Merck.
The US approved pills in December for use by two companies, Pfizer and Merck.
Both pills are said to contribute to the fight against COVID-19 disease, as studies have shown that they reduce the risk of hospitalizations and deaths among patients considered to be at high risk for coronavirus.
