The European Union will create a platform to coordinate efforts to rebuild Ukraine after the end of the war with Russia, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday.
The platform will be used to target investment needs, coordinate actions and channel resources, President von der Leyen said.
The Conference on the Recovery of Ukraine takes place in the Swiss city of Lugano.
“Since the beginning of the war, the European Union has mobilized around 6.2 billion euros in financial support,” said Mrs. von der Leyen. “More funds will come. We will be substantially engaged in the medium and long-term reconstruction of Ukraine.”added the President of the European Commission.
The platform will bring together countries, institutions, the private sector and civil society. It will also include international organizations such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank.
The European Investment Bank, the lending arm of the European Union, is proposing a financing structure previously used during the COVID-19 pandemic to help rebuild Ukraine with up to 100 billion euros in investment, Reuters reported today.
“Through the reconstruction platform, the European Commission can offer its extensive expertise in running programs that combine reform and investment”said Mrs von der Leyen.
“In addition, we have worked closely with Ukraine for a long time. And this work will only intensify now that Ukraine has officially become a candidate to join us.”.
Europe has a special responsibility and a strategic interest
to be on Ukraine’s side, she added.
“The goal of the Kremlin is the military, political and economic destruction of Ukraine”, she said. “They want to undermine the very existence of Ukraine as a state. We cannot and will not allow this to happen.”./VOA
