The Russian Ministry of Defense published today images of a transport ship leaving the port of Mariupol to the Sea of Azov.
A pro-Russian separatist leader said it was the first ship to sail from the Ukrainian port to Russia since it fell under the control of Russian forces.
“2,500 tons of sheet metal coils have left the port of Mariupol to sail to Rostov,” said Denis Pushilin, the separatist leader in Donetsk.
“This transport center is very important for the Donbas region. “It is the largest port on the Sea of Azov and the only one where all types of cargo are handled,” he said.
The port of Mariupol was the second most important in Ukraine after that of Odessa in the Black Sea, before the launch of the Russian offensive on 24 February.
Russia said last week that the port was resuming operations after the demining process in an area of 1.5 million square meters, and repairs to the pier.
After weeks of siege that wreaked havoc on the city, Russian forces this month took control of Mariupol, following the surrender of Ukrainian soldiers hiding in the Azovstal steel plant.
