The first portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge was made by painter Jamie Coreth.
The portrait is on display at the Fitzwilliam Museum of Cambridge University.
The artwork of Prince William and Catherine was commissioned last year by the Royal Cambridgeshire Portrait Fund as a gift to the people of the county.
Coreth said his creation was the most extraordinary privilege of his life.
The royal couple met the painter while visiting the Fitzgerald Museum earlier to see the portrait during the first day of the public exhibition.
The artist chose to honor the city of Cambridge using the tones and colors of many of its historic stone buildings in the background of the portrait, as well as using a hexagonal architectural motif seen in buildings across the city.
While the painting is on display in museums, the Royal Cambridgeshire Portrait Fund plans to use it to encourage children and young people from the county to take an interest in art.
Coreth said he wanted to portray the royal couple as “Relaxed and approachable, as well as elegant and dignified.”
He said: Since it is the first portrait to depict them together, and especially during their time as Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, I wanted the image to evoke a sense of balance between their public and private lives.
In the portrait, the Duchess is wearing a dress from the Brighton-based brand, The Vampire’s Wife, British Vogue reports.
Prince William previously received his official portrait in 2014 from Cardiff-born artist Dan Lilywell Hall, who became the youngest person to paint the Queen in 2013.
