Former Netherlands star Andy Van der Meyde has recently spoken about the “strange feeling” of attention shown by English women when he started playing for Liverpool club Everton.
Van der Meyde says he did not understand the massive interest of women in him and in footballers in general, which led to him later becoming known as a ‘playboy’ for his ‘off-field’ lifestyle.
But he justifies falling prey to temptation because he had not previously experienced such an attraction from local women, who followed famous footballers wherever they went.
The former Dutch footballer stayed for four years with Everton from 2005 to 2009 for whom he left the Italian team of Inter.
But his time in England was marred by many injuries that left him out of action for considerable time.
The 42-year-old recalled his time in Liverpool during a visit to the city to close the football season.
Asked about his holiday style and alcohol consumption, Van der Meyde admitted: “Of course I liked it, I had never tried to get so much attention from women before because I was a famous footballer.”
“I was always stopped for photos or autographs. It seemed very strange to me at first, I’m just a footballer, I’m not the president. “But then I started to think and tell you, very well that it is so, it is simpler”.
But despite his initial feeling for the attention of English women, Van der Meyde says that only from his ex-wife did he choose to play for Everton, as her demands prevented him from transferring to Monaco in France.
“I wanted to go to Monaco,” he said earlier. “But my ex-wife really liked animals. “The rules for keeping animals are cheaper in England, so we chose rainy Liverpool.”
After joining Everton for $ 3 million, Van der Meyde made just 24 appearances on the pitch in four seasons of injuries that disrupted his English adventure.
