The approval or not of the document that is known as the French proposal for the settlement of the dispute with Bulgaria, has caused quite a bit of tension and debate in the parliament of North Macedonia.
So strong were the debates and so divided were the parties that the session was adjourned without reaching a conclusion. The noise of the opposition causes the Prime Minister to leave the session, which is expected to continue again tomorrow at 11 am.
The opposition MPs have clearly opposed the proposal, even before the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who went to Skopje today to convince them that the approval of this proposal brings the country closer to the Bloc. But when she started to take her word, Dimitar Apasiev, deputy of the “Left” party, got out of the seat and headed to the podium, leaving her a placard with the inscription ‘NO’.
The president of the EC responded to this act with the sentence “I thank you for this democratic behavior, and turned the tables on the other side”.
While VMRO-DPMNE Deputy Dafina Stojanoska tore up the document in front of the parliament, calling the government’s deputies traitors and demanded the rejection of the proposal. While MP Ali Mehmeti from DUI said that the proposal should be approved as it does not harm Macedonians at all.
Despite these, von der Leyen remained persistent in her message.
“If you decide to approve the revised French proposal, the intergovernmental conference will be held in the coming days. I listened carefully to the concerns about the Macedonian language and identity. There is no doubt that the Macedonian language is your language. I repeat, there is no doubt that the Macedonian language is your language and we fully respect that. The principle of self-identification is important for every relationship.”
This statement of hers was received with applause in the parliament, but not outside it, during the entire time that the session took place, protests were held outside.
The police escorted at least 5 people, after many of the protesters threw hard objects in the direction of the parliament building.
For a long time, Bulgaria and North Macedonia have disagreements on the issue of language, identity and historical past, which have blocked the further integration of North Macedonia into the European Union and, consequently, Albania.
