The aggression launched by Russia in Ukraine was the main topic of the meeting of 20 major economies (G-20), which started in Bali, Indonesia.
In her speech at the start of the high-level meeting, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi called for unity.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi are present at the meeting.
According to analysts, the consensus during this meeting seems distant.
Mrs. Marsudi said that poor countries and developing countries have not yet recovered from the coronavirus pandemic, while they now face more challenges.
“We are already facing another crisis, the war in Ukraine. The effects of this war are felt globally in food prices, energy and fiscal space. As always, developing and low-income countries are the most affected. Global growth is forecast to slow to 2.9% in 2022, while inflation could reach as high as 8.7% for developing countries. The question is, can we solve these global problems on our own? The answer is no. Global challenges require global solutions”, she emphasized.
“When will you stop the war?; “Why don’t you stop the war?”, were the questions asked to the Foreign Minister of Russia by journalists, questions that did not receive an answer.
The G7 Foreign Ministers did not participate in the welcome dinner of this meeting, as according to the Indonesian Foreign Minister, the head of Russian diplomacy was present.
During this event, foreign ministers hold special meetings with their counterparts.
The G20 high-level meeting is attended by Western countries that have accused Moscow of war crimes in Ukraine, which it denies, and imposed sanctions, but also countries such as China, Indonesia, India and South Africa that have been silent on Russia.
