Officials in Haiti have said an attacker attempted to assassinate the state’s prime minister, Ariel Henry, during a rally to mark the anniversary of independence.
The incident happened on Saturday, after Henry arrived at a church in the city of Gonaives.
In some photos published online, it is seen that the prime minister and members of the security have tried to get into the car as soon as possible, as a result of the mass shootings.
The security situation in this state has deteriorated since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July last year.
Henry has vowed to crack down on powerful gangs, which are believed to be guilty of kidnapping and controlling gas supplies, which has left the state with shortages.
The prime minister’s office said “bandits and terrorists” were behind the assassination attempts, and that several arrest warrants had been issued for the suspects.
Henry became head of state after Moise’s assassination.
The reasons for his murder are not yet known.
Authorities have not announced an exact date when the new president will be elected.
The escalation of violence and the economic situation, along with some natural disasters, have led many Haitians to seek opportunities for better living in other countries.
