The refusal of the Five Star Movement to back the key aid decree in Italy, on which a vote is scheduled for Thursday, could spell the downfall of Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s coalition government.
The leadership of the populist movement, led by former prime minister Giuseppe Conte, met on Wednesday to decide whether to stay in the coalition. The cause of the tensions is the decree that will allocate billions of euros to families and companies, in an effort to curb the effects of the energy crisis and inflation.
But the Five Star Movement’s refusal to vote in parliament could cause a major crisis as his party is one of the most important in the ruling coalition. Draghi has asserted that he would leave the government if the “Five Star” Movement left the majority in power. In addition, if Conte’s party chooses to leave, it is likely that the right-wing League will not support the prime minister either.
Tensions within the majority have risen in recent weeks as Five Star itself is divided, particularly over the government’s support for Ukraine. Conte sought to find compromise with Draghi on some policies, but despite encouraging signs, it was not enough.
As general elections are scheduled to be held in the spring of 2023, the new possible scenario raises the possibility of early elections, as has been repeatedly called for by the leader of the right-wing Fratelli d’Italia party, Giorgia Meloni.
