Draghi addressed the office of President Sergio Matarrela early in the morning, who this time accepted his letter of resignation.

Matteo Salvini’s League, Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia and Giuseppe Conte’s Five Star Movement (M5S) decided to abstain from a confidence vote in the Senate on Wednesday.
Although Draghi managed to win the vote of confidence 95 to 38, the abstentions of his allies spelled the end of the national unity pact sealed in February 2021, when Draghi took office.
On July 14, President Mattarella rejected the 74-year-old’s resignation after the 5-Star Movement abstained during a vote on a stimulus package. He had called on Draghi to reconvene the parties in parliament and try to muster the necessary support to stay.
Draghi repeated his calls for unity in his speech to the Senate on Wednesday – but then the League and Forza Italia announced they would no longer remain in the coalition as long as M5S was part of it. In this situation, Draghi’s stay in office was no longer possible.
