Investigations to find out the fate of the crates, which were taken from the banana container inside the customs area of the port of Durrës, are continuing with intensity. The load of bananas inside the container that was opened and led to the arrest of 20 people at the sea port of Durrës had come for the account of the company “Zico”.
Based in Tirana, this company also operates near the fruit and vegetable market in Shkozet, Durrës. The banana container had arrived at the seaport of Durrës on July 8 and was stored in the customs area of the container terminal territory, awaiting customs clearance.
From the investigations, it turns out that the cargo was ordered in Colombia and had made several stops to be loaded at other transit ports, before arriving at the sea port of Durrës, where on Saturday evening the container was found to be open and with the absence of 49 crates of banana inside it. Immediately the structure of the Task Force in the port started the investigations, taking 20 people into custody, 16 of them employees of the Security Force of the Port Authority in Durrës. The authorities suspect that the container was opened during the night, so the security force employees who served the night shifts in the last few days, the two workers of the cargo receiving company who had appeared at the port to withdraw the cargo, as well as the operator, have been handcuffed. of the container terminal and another worker.
In the meantime, all security camera plans in the port are being checked, starting from the day when the container ship arrived at the quay, including the one with the illegally “damaged” cargo. The charges brought against the arrested are for “Misuse of duty” and “Opening, breaking and replacing the security signs of the customs authorities”, while the charge of “Smuggling with other goods” has been brought against the two employees of the “Zico” company.
The investigative team is working to secure evidence that raises reasonable suspicion of the illegal cargo inside the crates taken after the container was opened. It is suspected that an illegal load of cocaine was transported from South America to Albania through the banana load, to be trafficked to the EU countries, a route that is already known. The container was opened before it was subjected to scanner and physical control at customs and port border point police, bribing FSP personnel and manipulating security camera plans.
