Russian airlines are using other routes to travel from Russian territory in Kaliningrad to the Baltic Sea after the European Union shut down airspace as punishment for President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine.
Kaliningrad, a 15,000-square-kilometer land belonging to Russia, is located 300 km west of the continent and is located between the Baltic states and EU members Lithuania and Poland.
Instead of flying directly over Latvia and Lithuania, Russian planes are now forced to fly north toward St. Petersburg, then around the Baltic coast.
Canada has become the latest country, along with EU countries and Britain, to ban Russian aircraft from its airspace. A day ago, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Albania, Olta Xhaçka announced the closure of the borders for Russian planes.
