Scholz: The Western Balkans are part of Europe
Scholz stressed once again that the Western Balkans are part of Europe and that all countries in the region should join the EU.

The German Chancellor expressed his gratitude that Kosovo has joined the sanctions against Russia.
Dialogue process
Scholz said that in the light of events in Ukraine, it is important that Kosovo and Serbia gradually resolve the conflict between them. In this way they would make a contribution to peace and security not only in the Balkans but throughout Europe.
Scholz said he urged Kurti to take a constructive stance in the dialogue process, because an agreement between the two countries would benefit the entire Western Balkans, because the most important precondition for investment, jobs and prospects for young people is stability and security.
Germany and Kosovo closely linked
Scholz said that Germany and Kosovo are closely linked, because Germany is the largest bilateral investor in Kosovo as well as about 400,000 citizens of Kosovo origin living in Germany.
The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, in his speech strengthened the bilateral relations and said that Kosovo strongly condemns the fighting in Ukraine. Kurti said Kosovo is ready to host 5,000 refugees from Ukraine and has lifted visas for Ukrainian citizens.
Kosovo’s prime minister accused Russia of fomenting tensions in the Western Balkans. “There are factors controlled by the Kremlin that pose a threat to peace and security,” he said during a meeting with Chancellor Olaf Scholz, without elaborating on the factors.
Vucic promises rapprochement with Kosovo
After meeting with Kurti, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also met in Berlin with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. Vucic promised rapprochement with neighboring Kosovo and assured that he would do everything possible to reach a compromise.
Chancellor Scholz assured the Serbian president that Serbia’s EU accession process will be strongly supported by Germany. But for that, Serbia must continue on the path of reform – above all in matters of the rule of law, media freedom and the fight against organized crime.
