The US Special Envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, has made public today the name of the most corrupt state in the Balkans.
He said Bosnia and Herzegovina was the most corrupt country in Europe and accused politicians there of “corruption under the guise of national interests”.
Responding to a question about the close co-operation between Dragan Covic and Milorad Dodik, he brought it in the context of corruption, saying “you should look at it, not in the context of ethno-nationalism, but deepening corruption”.
Asked if corruption is BiH’s main problem, Escobar answered “absolutely” for Croatia’s N1. He added: “Bosnia is the most corrupt country in Europe.”
“If you look at the problems that Bosnia and Herzegovina has, the problem is not that people do not want to live with Croats, Bosniaks or Serbs. Young people are leaving the country because people cannot be employed without corrupt connections. This hurts Bosnia more than anything, so people are leaving the country. This is absolutely the problem and it’s not just my opinion. Well-known analyzes, such as that of Transparency International, show that Bosnia and Herzegovina is the most corrupt country in the Western Balkans and almost the most corrupt country in Europe. “So this is the most urgent problem.” tha Escobar.
