After two cases of a new sub-variant of the “Omicron” virus, called BA.2, were confirmed in Slovenia on Thursday, the Ministry of Health confirmed that the sub-variant was also detected in Croatia.
Currently, five cases have been confirmed with the sub-variant “Omicron BA.2”. The epidemiological processing of the infected is underway, as well as the close contacts, and after gathering all the relevant information, the public will be informed “, said the Minister of Health Vili Berosh for N1.
The mentioned sub-variant has already been registered in Denmark and its characteristics have not been researched and clear yet, but according to some data it is even more contagious than the previous types, but it does not cause stronger symptoms, Slovenian media report.
At least 400 people became infected with the BA.2 subtype in the UK in the first ten days of January. The existence of new subspecies has already been proven in more than 40 countries.
The PANGO list says that 79 per cent of infections confirmed so far with this type have been confirmed in Denmark. It is followed by Great Britain (6%), India (5%), Sweden (2%) and Singapore (2%).
The rapid spread of this subgroup suggests that it may be even more contagious than the first variant of omicron BA.1. The British Health Insurance Agency (UKHSA) has classified BA.2 as an “observation variant”.
“It’s in the nature of viruses to multiply and change. So it can be expected that there will be more strain during the pandemic, “said Meera Chand, director of the British Health Agency.
