The famous romantic or political film from everyone’s point of view, Titanic, by director James Cameron is said to be back on screens with a reworked version on Valentine’s Day, 2023.
But although the story has fascinated millions of viewers for two and a half decades, there has always been a vague “pit” in its subject, which fans have never let go of.
This is the moment at the end of the film when Rose (played by Winslet) stands on the surface of the water above a door after the Titanic is capsized. Her boyfriend Jack (played by DiCaprio) is seen standing in the frozen water next to her, before freezing to death.
Although the scene is one of the most powerful moments in terms of drama, viewers have always asked the same question: Jack does not climb young over water on the door where Rose stands?
And in fact the director has somewhat scarcely answered the question, the mystery of which has been admitted in some cases even by the protagonist Winslet.
She has said she does not understand why DiCaprio can not climb and possibly escape with him over the floating door.
But the answer comes from an interview with director Cameron in 2017 when asked about Jack’s death.
“The answer is simple, because on page 147 of the screenplay Jack has to die.”
Cameron goes on to say that this is an artistic choice:
“I know this is a bit silly, because we are discussing this 20 years later. “But the film is about death and separation, which are what inspire emotions, so it does not matter much if he died of a cold or if a chimney fell on his head, they are just non-physical artistic reasons.”
